DEPARTMENT OF ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY AND MICROBIOLOGY Overview

Introduction of the Department

Oral medicine is a clinical discipline concerned with the health of and with the diseases involving the oral and Para oral structures. It includes those principles of medicine that relate to the mouth, as well as research in biological, pathological, and clinical spheres. Oral medicine includes the diagnosis and medical management of diseases specific to the Oro facial tissues and of oral manifestations of systemic diseases.

It further includes the management of behavioural disorders and the oral and dental treatment of medically compromised patients.

The department in this institute is running both the undergraduate & PG Program. The daily OPD count is more than 450 patients per day with a new patient record of more than 200 patients per day.

Oral Radiology or Maxillofacial Imaging as it is now called is the art and science of radiography (taking radiographs) and interpreting those (radiodiagnosis). With the advent of newer Imaging modalities which do not need radiation energy to acquire an image, the term has been broadened to Imageology. This branch concerns with not only images of teeth and alveolar bone but also the jaws and para-oral structures. Thus it is a specialized sub-branch or specialization of Radiology concerning itself with the maxillofacial region.

The Radiology section is well equipped with latest Imaging Modalities required in Dental & Maxillofacial Imaging. The daily turn out is of more than 70 dental Radiographs & dozens of OPG & Skull radiographs.

Vision & Mission of the Department

PG Program

Vision : To  initiate  and promote a training program in Oral Medicine and Radiology that trains students to independently practice the subject of Oral Medicine and Radiology as an exclusive specialty practice in  private clinics, radiology centers and corporate hospitals

 Mission:

  1. Educate by having a clear vision of principles and philosophy of screening, diagnosing and managing oral diseases/oral manifestations of systemic diseases
  2. Ensure excellent follow up with meticulous record keeping
  3. To indoctrinate ALARA as a critical responsibility
  4. Promote clarity on principles of prescription of radiographs
  5. Learn motivate and educate on excellence in interpretation and optimal use of modern imaging

UG PROGRAM

Vision : To initiate and promote a training program in Oral Medicine under- graduate education that aims to bring clarity on the actual role of oral medicine in dental practice ( role of a dentist as an oral physician ) even as we endeavor to make the learning process an enjoyable journey while promoting a strong ethical basis for appropriate professional conduct and compassionate patient care

Mission

  1. Educate to bring clarity on the actual role of oral medicine in dental practice ( role of a dentist as an oral physician ) .
  2. Allot time for education on ethics in both the lecture halls as well as clinics
  3. Develop a teaching and evaluation process to train the students in the three core roles of a dentist as an oral physician
    1. Oral cancer screening
    2. Oral manifestations of systemic disease
    3. Oral mucosa screening by inspection and palpation
  4. To make the student clear on when and what patients are best referred to an oral physician
    1. Is this a routine dental case or an oral disease ?
    2. Is it a diagnostic dilemma?
    3. Is this a case which ideally needs medical management or surgical management ?
    4. Do you suspect any systemic disease or syndrome ?
  5. Innovate in teaching methods to make learning fun

Oral Radiology

Vision : To initiate and promote a training program in Oral Radiology under- graduate education that aims to indoctrinate ALARA as a critical responsibility which is best addressed by the right techniques , right equipment , judicious and appropriate prescription of radiographs and conscientious and thorough interpretation of radiographs .

Mission

  1. Develop Promote and assiduously implement a best practice protocol for radiography with cross- infection control and radiation hygiene protocol incorporated and adapted to the local reality and practicality
  2. Promote the use of paralleling technique radiography as a modern need of dentistry
  3. Promote the use of digital radiography as a modern need of dentistry
  4. Promote clarity on principles of       prescription of radiographs
  5. Promote excellence in a conscientious and thorough interpretation of radiographs
